After 3 years, Google abandons infinite scrolling in search and returns with Numbered Pages

Google announced a significant change in the way it presents search results, abandoning infinite scrolling in favor of numbered pages. This change, initially implemented in the desktop version, will reach smartphones from July.

Implemented in 2021 for mobile devices and in 2022 for desktop, scrolling was intended to make navigation easier, allowing users to continually scroll to see more results. However, Google revealed that this implementation did not increase user satisfaction and, in many cases, results beyond the first scroll were ignored.

With the return of page numbering on the SERP (Search Engine Results Page, in free translation, Search Engine Results Page) , Google hopes to deliver results more quickly and efficiently. Infinite scrolling loaded more data than necessary, often bringing results that users didn't request. The change will allow users to find the information they want in a more organized and accessible way, the way they were before the switch to infinite scrolling.

One concern arising from this change is the impact on website visibility. With infinite scrolling, there was a greater chance that less relevant results would still be seen. With the return of numbered pages, results beyond the first page may become less accessible, reducing traffic to these sites.

Google's decision to return to page numbering in search results reflects its commitment to improving the user experience, offering faster and more relevant results. Although it may impact the visibility of some sites, the change aims to make search more efficient and satisfactory for all users.
